The Rolling Ball

چکیده

Interactive graphics systems often need techniques that allow the user to rotate graphical objects freely in three-dimensional space using commonly-available two-dimensional input devices such as a mouse. Achieving this goal is hampered by the fact that there is no single natural mapping from the two parameters of the input device to the three-parameter space of orientations. Here we i n troduce the rolling-ball method for mouse-driven three-dimensional orientation control, along with some of its interesting extensions to other scientiic visualization problems. This technique exploits a continuous two-dimensional motion modeled after that of a ball rolling without slipping on a at table to reach a n y arbitrary three-dimensional orientation. Unlike a v ariety of other methods, the rolling-ball approach has only a single state and is completely context-free: one can turn oo the mouse cursor and ignore 1

Fuzzy PD Cascade Controller Design for Ball and Beam System Based on an Improved ARO Technique

The ball and beam system is one of the most popular laboratory setups for control education. In this paper, we design a fuzzy PD cascade controller for a ball and beam system using Asexual Reproduction Optimization (ARO) technique. The ball & beam system consists of a servo motor, a grooved beam, and a rolling ball. This system utilizes a servo motor to control ball’s position on the beam. Chan...

Residual stress field of HIPed silicon nitride rolling elements

The residual stress field of HIPed Si3N4 rolling elements were studied. Two kinds of HIPed Si3N4 ball blanks self-finished at different nominal lapping loads ranging from 1.3kgf/ball to 10.87kgf/ball and four kinds of commercially finished 1⁄2′′ (12.7mm) HIPed Si3N4 balls before, during and after RCF tests were investigated. The experimental results showed that in the finishing process of HIPed...

Improved Blends between Primitive Surfaces

By applying results on canal surfaces, we study exact rational parametrizations of fixed radius rolling ball blends of pairs of natural quadrics. We classify all configurations where this kind of rational parametrization is possible, and describe a general algorithm for parametrizing fixed radius rolling ball blends. The algorithm is then applied to parametrize the fixed radius rolling ball ble...

G 2 and the Rolling Ball

Understanding the exceptional Lie groups as the symmetry groups of simpler objects is a longstanding program in mathematics. Here, we explore one famous realization of the smallest exceptional Lie group, G2. Its Lie algebra g2 acts locally as the symmetries of a ball rolling on a larger ball, but only when the ratio of radii is 1:3. Using the split octonions, we devise a similar, but more globa...

Auditory-visual interactions in the perception of a ball's path.

We carried out two experiments to measure the combined perceptual effect of visual and auditory information on the perception of a moving object's trajectory. All visual stimuli consisted of a perspective rendering of a ball moving in a three-dimensional box. Each video was paired with one of three sound conditions: silence, the sound of a ball rolling, or the sound of a ball hitting the ground...

FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OFA ROLLED AZ31 MAGNESIUM ALLOYS PREPARED BY EPAND BB CONDITIONS

Abstract: Rotating bending fatigue tests have been performed using smooth specimens of a rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy in laboratory air at ambient temperature. Fatigue strength and characteristic was evaluated and fracture mechanism was discussed on the basis fracture surface analysis. Electrical polishing (EP) as well as deep rolling (ball burnishing (BB)) U-notched specimens were performed on ...
